In some respects, this 40 y.o. defies description. But as a well-running, fairly stock and intact example it strikes the perfect balance between too 'basket case' to bother and too restored or stock to ruin. Good bones, and mechanically very accessible. I dare say it was in need of rescue, however. First impressions, the sagging seat will not make it; the dented tank has promise but needs finishing and paint and restored badges; the side covers seem out of place in chrome; the painted headlight is a miss; the exhaust headers don't wear tape well; the pegs and brackets will need to be replaced. A film of oil covered almost everything and the years had not been kind to rubber and plastic components. Finally, everything needed to be gone over (brakes, forks, seals, m/c, bearings, controls, carbs, etc).
I gave myself about a year to strip and rebuild this project into what I envisioned as a mildly 'factory' cafe take on an otherwise stock 850T (per above page links).
For perspective - the author, about the time this 1975 850-T was built, with his first bike (on bike, with cousins Don and Steve waiting a turn):
How to wire a starter on a 75 Moto Guzzi
ReplyDeleteHi.
ReplyDeleteIn the end, my starter was serviceable and I did not dig that deep into it. More on another blog post here:

I did a lot of forum searches (for example Wildgoose Chase) and came up with helpful info on wiring the starter.
You should check out Gregory Bender's website; below is a link to his alphabetical list of Tonti-framed component parts. Look for 'wiring harness installation' then 'relay connections - starter'.

Hope this helps!
